Originally a hard breed bred by miners, it retained excellent hunting talent. Yet today he is treated more like a social dog. It has a special quilted coat, which is trimmed and not lazy at all. The colouring is blue, blue with tan (light) badges, brownish or sandy. His fame spread outside his native region and an association was started for the breed in 1877. Although his expression is mild he is quite capable of fending\nfor himself, but will not seek a scrap. He is a tough little dog, this unique breed has a lamb-like look about it, but don\u2019t be fooled, and he is a terrier through and through. A North Country dog, originally his role was to catch rabbits for the family pot, and a sporting dog he still remains.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><strong><u>GENERAL APPEARANCE:<\/u><\/strong><\/a>A graceful, lithe, muscular dog, with\nno signs of either weakness or coarseness. Whole head pear or\nwedge-shaped, and expression in repose mild and gentle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>IMPORTANT PROPORTIONS<\/u><\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Body slightly greater in length\nthan height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>BEHAVIOUR AND TEMPERAMENT<\/u><\/strong>: A lively, playful, confident dog. An intelligent companion with strong hunting instincts. A loving dog of good character, dignified; not shy, not nervous.  He is gentle at rest, but very brave at excitement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>HEAD<\/u><\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>Covered with profuse silky top-knot which should be nearly\nwhite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CRANIAL REGION:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skull: Narrow, but deep and rounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop: There must be no stop: the line from occiput to nose-end\nstraight and unbroken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FACIAL REGION:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nose: Nostrils large and well defined. Blue and blue and tan must\nhave black noses, liver and sandies must have brown noses. Nasal sponge: Nasal openings large and well defined.  Individuals with a bluish hue and individuals with a bluish hue and burning must have a black nose, and individuals with a liver and sandy colour must have a brown nose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Muzzle: Well filled up beneath eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lips: Close fitting, without flew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaw \/ Teeth: Teeth large and strong. Scissor bite, i.e. upper teeth\nclosely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eyes: <strong>Relatively small, bright. Ideal eye has appearance of being\ntriangular. Blues have a dark eye; blue and tans have lighter eye with\namber lights, livers and sandies have a light hazel eye.<\/strong> small, bright. The ideal eyes appear to be triangular. The blue have dark eyes; the burning blue have lighter eyes with an amber tinge; the liver and sandy individuals have light hazel eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><u>Ears:<\/u><\/a>Moderately sized, filbert-shaped, set on low, and hanging\nflat to cheek. Thin and velvety in texture; covered with short fine\nhair with fringe of whitish silky hair at tip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>NECK<\/u><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Long and tapering, deep base with no tendency to throatiness. Springs well up from shoulders, and head carried rather\nhigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>BODY<\/u><\/strong>: Muscular and markedly flexible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back: has natural arch over loin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Loin: Arched loin with curved topline immediately above loins<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chest: Deep and fairly broad. Flat ribbed, deep through brisket\nwhich reaches to elbow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Underline and belly: Arched loin creating a definite tuck-up of\nunderline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>TAIL:<\/u><\/strong>Moderate length, thick at root, tapering to a point and gracefully curved. Set on low, never carried over back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>LIMBS:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FOREQUARTERS: Forelegs straight, wider apart at chest than at feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shoulder: Flat and sloping<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metacarpus (Pastern): Long and slightly sloping without weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><u>Forefeet:<\/u><\/a>Long hare feet with thick and well closed-up pads. <strong>Padssound and free from cracks or horny excrescences.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HINDQUARTERS: Muscular and moderate length. Hindlegs have appearance of being longer than forelegs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stifle (Knee):<strong> Moderate turn.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hind feet: <strong>Long <\/strong>hare feet with thick and well closed-up pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metatarsus (Rear pastern): Hocks strong and well let down, turning neither in nor out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><strong><u>GAIT \/ MOVEMENT:<\/u><\/strong><\/a>: <strong>: Capable of galloping at high speed and\nhave appearance of being able to do so. <\/strong><strong>Action very distinctive,rather mincing, light and springy in slower paces and slight roll when in full stride.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>COAT:<\/u><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hair: Very distinctive. Thick and linty, standing well out from skin, but not wiry. A distinct tendency to twist, particularly on head and\nface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colour: Blue, liver, or sandy with or without tan. Darker pigment to be encouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>SIZE AND WEIGHT:<\/u><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Height at the withers: About 41 cms.
